Jimmie Tyler Brashear Elementary School
Dallas Independent School District : Dallas, Texas

This 88,500 square foot elementary school is in the heart of a South Dallas neighborhood revitalization area. Public meetings greatly influenced the design. The exterior echoes the neighborhood’s 1950 – 1960’s era architecture with deep overhangs, simple but elegant material changes, and large glass elements. The building is organized to easily allow the front public areas to be open after hours without access to the 33 classrooms housed on two levels. The public areas include a large auditorium, music hall, special education areas, cafeteria, kitchen, and administration services. The 800 Kindergarten through Sixth student body also utilize the art room, computer lab, gymnasium, science rooms, and the sports field and play ground areas. This school is attached to the local Hampton Illinois library via a connecting corridor.
